Meet Deborah | Mustard House

Deborah, with a long career in accessories and pattern design for both UK and international brands, launched her homewares brand, Mustardhouse, in 2020. Driven by her passion for vibrant and playful designs, she sought to create unique home accessories inspired by mid-century aesthetics and bold colours. Mustardhouse embodies Deborah's love for color and pattern, resulting in a thoughtfully curated collection that showcases her original and distinctive style.

Can you describe your design process from concept to finished product

I start by drawing, doodling & mark making then design my patterns digitally. I experiment with colour combinations from my travel photos and research images. Once I'm happy with a design I'll work with my suppliers to create the finished products. The fabric quality & finish of my products are really important so I various development make samples until I'm happy with the result.

How do you incorporate sustainability into your work?

All of my products are produced in the UK to keep my carbon footprint low. I work closely with my suppliers along each phase of the production process & use organic fabrics for my tea towels, oven gloves & napkins. All my packaging is made from re-cycled Kraft card.

How do you stay inspired and keep your ideas fresh?

I'm always looking for inspiration!. I love to travel & look at packaging, architecture & unexpected colour combinations in a cafe or store. There's also an element of nostalgia to my designs, I also draw inspiration from colour & pattern from my 1970's childhood.

What role does storytelling play in your designs?

Most of my designs are named after places in Portugal a country I've spent many years travelling in. I start with the pattern and colour combinations then comes the names which evoke memories of trips, meals and time spent with friends.

How do you go about selecting new colours?

I love experimenting with colour & texture and mixing patterns together for added visual interest. I enjoy combining colourful ceramics with my patterns & coloured or textured glassware to create a playful and eclectic look.
